Downtime

A term that can be used to describe inactive time between games, or during games when play is suspended and players are Out-of-character.
Some larp groups may have particular expectations of behaviour, including check-in or action systems to explain what’s happening in the time gap between games. This word can also refer to such systems.[1] These check-ins can improve a player's sense of agency, story continuity, and engagement throughout time-skips or portions of the game which the GMs have decided not to narrate or play out.
Example games
- Caligo Mundi campaigns often have downtime actions aka downtimes between games, allowing players to indicate what their characters are up to during time skips, often by email to the GMs.
- Mind's Eye Theatre uses downtime actions that allow character to influence the world between games within a campaign.
