Phenomenon is a roleplaying convention in Australia. It runs every Queens Birthday weekend (early June) in Canberra. While the core of the convention is table top roleplaying, it has a strong Australian freeform / theatre-style larp component.
History
The first Phenomenon was run in 1994. Seed funding was donated from the earnings of Necromonicon conventions I-V[1].
While intended to be a Canberra convention, due to venue costs it was held over the border at Karabar High School in New South Wales.[2] In 1996 during a collaboration with ANURPS (Australian National University Role Playing Society), the convention shifted to ANU (Australian National University) in Canberra, and has stayed in the city ever since.
In 1997, the New Designers' Award was introduced, to encourage new writers with innovative and experimental writing.
In 1999, rather than hosting a single Phenomenon event as usual, two collaborations were run. One was held with Canberra Games Society at their annual event Cancon, 22nd-26th January at EPIC (Canberra Showgrounds in Mitchell)[3]. This allowed Cancon organisers to focus on wargaming, whilst Phenomenon organisers focussed on organising the roleplaying side of the convention. Despite it being a Cancon event first and foremost, it eventually became known as "The Year Pheno Ate CanCon" (And NOT the other way round...) due to the fact that after their collaboration with Phenomenon, Cancon ceased to run roleplaying games, electing to keep their focus on wargaming. The second 1999 event was Recon, held in collaboration with ANURPS on August the 20th-22nd at ANU campus. In the year 2000, Phenomenon returned to their titular annual event.
After some shifting around in the calendar, from 2003 it ran consistently at Queens Birthday weekend in early June at Daramalan College.
In 2018 it changed to run on the Labour Day weekend (ACT calendar) in early October.
