I've joined this site as an editor to contribute to existing records of Australian roleplaying. Due to the 'cultural cringe' effect that many Australians have over their work (a persistent belief that anything "Australian" is inferior to anything made overseas, combined with the 'tall poppy' syndrome fear of standing out and becoming a target to be taken down a few pegs) few people in the early days of roleplaying considered what they were doing precious or important enough to be worthy of record. Some avoided recording due to a self-protective impulse, a fear or feeling that if our subculture was made visible, that it would also be made vulnerable in some way. So we lack critical evidence of what the early scene looked like, its influence overseas, or anything that might give newcomers a stronger picture of the rich subculture of gaming here and what it means to the community members who carry that torch onwards.
I've joined this site as an editor to contribute to existing records of Australian roleplaying, as Australian 'cultural cringe' has resulted in spotty records of the early days of Australian roleplaying. So I think there's a need for the newer generation to take up the responsibility of better documentation so that people know what it all means to the community members who carry that torch onwards.
So I think there's a need for the newer generation to take up the responsibility of better documentation. Though our local population is less dense and smaller than many overseas communities, which has added to the difficulty of building a mature critical discourse of our art without stepping on any toes. Being loud about it, putting any kind of record out there can be a little scary for people, including me! But, something something do it scared anyway.

About me

I'm a writer/organiser who's been larping since 2012 and running games since 2016. First got into it after studying a Bachelor of Design in Games, and got dragged into larp by a fellow classmate. While I ended up leaving the games development industry for other pastures, this scene has been a wonderful and rewarding vehicle for all my skills to be poured into.

While my main involvement is with Caligo Mundi - currently as Treasurer, but also as a GM/storyteller/assistant for bringing multiple different campaigns and oneshots to life - I've also run games at the Australian conventions Phenomenon and Conquest, and I've played in other games of different kinds around Victoria, including battlegames and blockbusters. I've also been part of a few local panels, nothing particularly new for any game runners but all made to help make skill-sharing and documentation easier locally.

Resume

Games I've written and GM'd for include:

  • Mage: Ascension - Campaign, 2 sessions
  • Changeling: The Lost - 12 Nights in the Garden - Campaign, 6 sessions
  • Pride and Extreme Prejudice, my very silly oneshot. First ran in 2019.
  • Manafont University - a whimsical magical academy campaign, 6 sessions
  • Revenant's End - A 9-month long weird west.

I've also helped with venue coordination and other organisational tasks for a number of other events, including some camping events.

Other games I've played have included 'Changeling: Threefold Blessings'. You can see me in the group shot there, down the front in silver armour and a lilac wig. I've played in a lot more but usually the photos are private and not shareable online so it's nice to have that one there.
