Megagames are team games, anywhere between 30-200 players, playing the same game in the same space[1][2]. They are typically a blend of board games, wargaming, negotiations, and LARPing/roleplaying.

Within teams, players take on different unique roles to interact with the game and achieve different objectives. While some games have 'win states', many do not, and instead seek to generate a narrative through the experience of the game itself. They have taken place through a wide variety of different genres, and there are organisations dedicated to megagaming across the English-speaking world.

Example games

  • Watch the Skies - a large-scale megagame that simulates a global crisis caused by the arrival of extra terrestrial beings on Earth. Designed by Stone Paper Scissors[3].

  • Multiform - While multiforms have a more consistent emphasis on the roleplaying aspects of blended game formats, there can be similarities between experiences of these different types and elements of their design.
