Mission statement
Midnight in Melbourne is a theatrical roleplay experience set within the world of Vampire: The Masquerade. The organisation has 3 core tenets that exhibit their goals:
- ‘Costumes & Cocktails’ - To be fun and beginner friendly,
- ’Vampires are symbols of violation’ - To allow for performances that are dramatic or engage with political horror, and
- ‘Your characters are monsters not you’ - To ensure the safety and shared responsibility of storytelling with all participants.
History
Midnight in Melbourne commenced in 2023 as a one shot by Ivan Nevill. Initially designed to be a fun social night for hospitality workers and people who missed the Vampire scene of the 90’s. However the success and buzz of the first event spurred a second event, and this enthusiasm has continued into an ongoing chronicle.
Prior to Midnight, Ivan had been a Storyteller within the Camarilla, notably as a Werewolf: The Apocalypse Storyteller. In designing the project this experience was the catalyst for a home system. Utilising an entirely homebrew system for disciplines, combat resolution and items. An ongoing design influence for Midnight, as described by the producers, is ‘No homework’. All key actions, and activities happen on the night and within the event. There are no downtimes and the influence phase is resolved by a vote.
For the first year Ivan produced Midnight in Melbourne as a solo entity with 3 assistant Storytellers. However from Episode 4 onwards he began collaboration with Elm. They had performed within the event during Episode 2 and 3, created a number of artworks and the logo upon request. Initially Elm was engaged as an event photographer and staff artist, however they quickly moved into a production capacity and the pair have worked as equals ever since.
The event has run for 13 Episodes, occurring once every 3 months within the dying month of the season closest to the 13th. Midnight in Melbourne has grown in size over the 3 years of production. Commencing at approximately 20 - 30 performers, and now hosting 80 - 90 on a single night.
A notable achievement of the production in 2025 was being nominated for Game of the Year by the Australian Role-Playing Industry Awards (ARPIA). Post the nomination Midnight has produced a celebratory design publication of their first 10 events, with a dedication to continue documenting and celebrating their productions.
