'''KapCon''' is a roleplaying convention in [[New Zealand]]. It runs every January in Wellington, NZ, and since 2003 has been held at Wellington High School. While the core of the convention is table roleplaying games, since 2001 it has held a [[flagship]] larp which for a long time provided a focus for the Wellington larp community. In recent years it has also offered a variety of small [[theatre-style]] larps as part of its normal gaming streams.

==History==
Before 2001 KapCon was exclusively focused on tabletop gaming. In 2001 a change of venue and timetable resulted in a larp being held and this format has been retained ever since. Many of the flagships have since been run at other New Zealand conventions.
'''A Game of Thrones: Blackfyre Rising''' is a 3 hour [[theatre-style]] larp. It is set in the world of "A Game of Thrones", in the leadup to the Blackfyre Rebellion, a century before the books.

The game was first run at [[Intercon]] K, and has since been run at Intercon, the [[Festival of the LARPs]], and at [[Chimera]] and [[Phoenix]] in New Zealand.<ref>[http://larpresume.boldlygoingnowhere.org/games/241/a-game-of-thrones-blackfyre-rising A Game of Thrones: Blackfyre Rising], ''Larp Resume''. Retreived 10 August 2015. Note that Larp Resume listings are usually incomplete.</ref>

==Summary==
In Westeros, the Targaryens rule the Six Kingdoms, as they have since they came with their dragons to conquer, bringing fire and blood. King Aegon Targaryen IV is dead, and on his deathbed has decreed all of his bastards to be legitimate heirs to the throne. His only legitimate son, Daeron II, has assumed the Iron Throne, but the length of his new reign is anything but certain. The Great Houses have called their banners and marched to King's Landing, and it remains to be seen whether they come to swear fealty, or to plunge the Six Kingdoms into bitter war. Now, Gods, stand up for bastards!

Set in the world of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, Blackfyre Rising is a game of politics and romance, chivalry and treachery, bastardy and baseness, the bonds of blood and the will to power, and perhaps a touch of magic. There will be great lords and ladies (both honorable and treacherous), knights, holy men and women, wise maesters, noble hostages, and more people with claims to the throne than is probably healthy.
The '''Stanford Gaming Society''' is a gaming club at Stanford University in California, [[USA]]. It runs small [[theatre-style]] larps in the [[MIT Assassins' Guild]] style several times a year, generally monthly or less frequently. Occasionally games are run in other theatre styles as well, including the original SGS/Stanford style games, which generally involve more roleplay and fewer mechanics. Since 2016, the [[Humans vs. Zombies]] community at Stanford has become associated with the Stanford Gaming Society.

While the Stanford Gaming Society has been around since 2001, LARPs have only been run there since 2003. The creation of the SGS/Stanford style of LARP is attributed to J Li in 2003.<ref name=jli>[http://www.livinggamesconference.com/fifth-round-of-keynoters-announced/ Living Games Conference], ''Fifth Round of Keynoters Announced''. Retreived 18 November 2018.</ref> Most LARPs run at Stanford are four-hour or shorter one-shots, though in the past there were weekend-long and week-long games. The week-long games were known as "Epic LARP" and were generally played over Spring Break during the 2000s. Eventually, when the local LARP culture was beginning to fade, an MIT Assassins' Guild alum who came to study at Stanford reignited the SGS LARP community by introducing it to MIT Assassins' Guild style LARPs.

The Stanford Gaming Society also runs "Guild Camps", an event originating from the MIT Assassins' Guild. Guild Camp is a LARP writing and GMing boot camp that teaches prospective LARP writers and GMs to write and run an MIT Assassins' Guild Style LARP over the course of two weeks. Guild Camp is held once a year, during Spring Break and the following week.

It is common for SGS alumni to continue to play and GM games in association with the SGS, and some of these people have gone on to run LARPs they have written at Bay Area conventions and beyond. A group of these alumni also formed the Luminary Roleplay Society, which runs mostly games written at Stanford, both SGS style and MIT Assassins' Guild style, but is open to players from around the San Francisco Bay Area. One Stanford-written game associated with the [[Luminary Roleplay Society]], "A Reunion at Katmeers," is on the schedule for [[Intercon]] S.

'''Gamist''' is one of the three agendas or approaches to play in [[larp theory|larp theories]] such as the [[Threefold Model]], [[Three Way Model]], and [[GNS Theory]]. In the gamist agenda, an rpg is approached ''as a game'', with consequent values of fairness, challenge, and being able to succeed or "win".<ref>John Kim, [http://www.darkshire.net/~jhkim/rpg/theory/threefold/faq_v1.html The Threefold Model FAQ], q3, February 14 2003.
'''Dogma 99''' is a [[larp manifesto]] written by Lars Wingård and Eirik Fatland. It is one of the foundational texts of [[Nordic larp]] and has been deeply influential on that style of larping.<ref>[http://www.hopesandfears.com/hopes/culture/film/168793-dogma-99-larpers Feel something real: The Dogme 95-inspired battle for the heart of live action role-playing], ''Hopes & Fears'', March 31 2015. Retrieved 5 February 2016.</ref> It inspired a succession of other manifestos, including the [[Manifesto of the Turku School]].

Dogma 99 opposed the features and tropes of "conventional" larp, including [[mechanics]], [[props]], backstory and secrecy (and hence implicitly [[brute-force design]]), action, violence, genre and [[Gamist|Gamism]]. Instead, it emphasized [[transparency]], player equality, and realism. Its authors now consider Dogma 99 to be "an archaic text", as its target, conventional larp, is "no longer around".<ref>Eirik Fatland and Lars Wingård, "The Dogma 99 Manifesto", ''The Foundation Stone of Nordic Larp'', Knutpunkt 2014. p. 287</ref> Many of the defining features of Nordic larp - the lack of mechanics, the shift away from traditional story forms, and the [[360 degree illusion]] - have been heavily influenced by Dogma 99.
'''Nametags''' or '''Name Badges''' are used in some larps to convey information to the players. They can either be [[diagetic]], existing [[in-game]], or non-diagetic, existing [[out-of-game]], depending on the larp's setting. In addition to a character's name, they can be used to convey in-game information (e.g. using a [[badge code]]), as a sideband for mechanical information or to reinforce the setting, or purely for out-of-game information such as play preferences or preferred pronouns.

Name badges are mostly used in [[theatre-style]] larps. In some larp communities, use of non-diagetic name badges is viewed as fatally compromising [[immersion]].

An '''Amnesia game''' is a larp where the character starts out missing memories. This may be a true ''tabula rasa'', where the players start out with, at most, a short description of their character's general affect -- or the characters may be incomplete (possibly even seeming complete, at first), with holes or false memories replacing the missing memories at first.

Some (including the first, [[Tabula Rasa]]) amnesia games feature fully-written character sheets that are re-accquired over the course of the game.

However, this is not the only possible mechanism. A game where [[workshop]] techniques are used to fill in missing memories over the course of the game, allowing the players to build on the starting emptiness rather than discover it would still be considered an amnesia game.

Any game where characters acquire new memories via a [[diegetic]] technique might be considered loosely an amnesia game as well -- for instance, a game where the characters acquire past life memories over the course of the game, or even memories of future or parallel lives can be considered an amnesia game even though the characters' memories are technically complete at the game's start.
The three styles can be visualised as the vertices of an equilateral triangle, with each game (and each player's preferences) falling somewhere within the defined space in its combination of agendas.

The threefold model provided the foundation for the later [[GNS Theory]], and for the larp-specific [[Three Way Model]], which highlighted [[Immersion]] by replacing the Simulationist agenda with an [[Immersionist]] one.<ref>Petter Bøckman, [http://www.darkshire.net/~jhkim/rpg/theory/threefold/faq_larp.html The Three Way Model: Revision of the Threefold Model for Scandinavian LARP].

'''Larp theory''' is the study of [[Live action role-playing game (LARP)|live-action roleplaying games]] as a social or artistic phenomenon. It is a subfield of role-playing game theory.

Early analysis of larp used John Kim's [[Threefold Model]], which postulated three competing creative agendas: [[Gamist]], [[Dramatist]], and [[Simulationist]].<ref>John Kim, [http://www.darkshire.net/~jhkim/rpg/theory/threefold/faq_v1.html The Threefold Model FAQ]. October 16, 1998. Retrieved 10 February 2016.</ref> This was later adopted into a larp-specific [[Three Way Model]], which highlighted [[Immersion]] by replacing the Simulationist agenda with an [[Immersionist]] one.<ref>Petter Bøckman, [http://www.darkshire.net/~jhkim/rpg/theory/threefold/faq_larp.html The Three Way Model: Revision of the Threefold Model for Scandinavian LARP]. April 2002. Retrieved 10 February 2016.</ref> An alternative was the [[Focus of Interaction]] theory, which divided larps using a two-axis model of interaction and [[mechanics]].<ref>Mike Young (2003), "The Spectrum of LARP". In ''[[The Book of LARP]]'', Interactivities, Ink, 2003.</ref> Normative theories also emerged, in the form of the anti-gamist [[Dogma 99]] manifesto, and the pro-Immersion [[Manifesto of the Turku School]].

Later works of larp theory moved on from analysing and arguing about larp's creative agendas to a broader set of questions, such as:
* The definition of larp, and the relationship between larp and larp-like activities such as (Danish) freeform gaming, pervasive games, [[Alternate Reality Game]]s, theatre, and educational simulation;
* Whether larp can be art;
* Identification and analysis of key concepts of larp, such as [[immersion]], [[bleed]] and [[steering]];
* Study and comparison of different styles of larp and different larp cultures;
* Ways of classifying larp;
* The formation and dynamics of larp communities;
* Ethics of larp, both in play and organisation;

Larp theory is studied both as part of academic games studies courses, and at specific conferences such as [[NELCO]], [[Knutepunkt]], [[Living Games]], [[KOLA]] and [[Wyrdcon]].

I have to wonder -- is it worth using #ask to build this (the first part, at least) with appropriate category tags so people can remove the category when they fill in the page rather than requiring a manual edit to remove them? This would also enable a list of glossary stubs, if we have any (which would allow a reasonable "I know this isn't done" glossary entry without removing something from "help wanted"). : As in [https://www.semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Inline_queries this]? I don't know enough about Wiki backends to really know whether it would be better or not. You could try it on the blank existing pages, though.--[[User:IdiotSavant|IdiotSavant]] ([[User talk:IdiotSavant|talk]]) 20:11, 27 December 2017 (PST)

: Yup. Semantic Mediawiki is reasonably useful, so I included it in the base install, though I haven't upgraded it recently. The ask would be something like:
<nowiki>
{{#ask:
[[Category:Glossary]]
[[Category:Blank Pages]]
</nowiki> ... or not, since apparently mediawiki installation has become complicated due to them implementing composer and Dreamhost refusing to use it on non-VPS sites because of cpu usage. Will have to think about this. Later. [[User:Mneme|Mneme]] ([[User talk:Mneme|talk]]) 21:00, 27 December 2017 (PST)

Ok, figured out how to install without Composer. [[User:Mneme|Mneme]] ([[User talk:Mneme|talk]]) 21:29, 27 December 2017 (PST)

Some (including the first, [[Tabula Rasa]]) amnesia games feature fully-written character sheets that are re-accquired over the course of the game

This practice was far more common in the [[Theatre-style]] community prior to the near-universal adoption of the Internet -- however, it is still used in cases where the character sheets are in progress when the players are notified of who they are playing, when only general aspects of characters are determined pre-game, rather than character details, or, as in many [[Amnesia game]]s, when casting is pre-determined, but there is a game-related reason players are not given their sheets before the game starts.
'''Gen Con''' is a gaming convention -- the largest such in the US, with a (as of 2017, capped) population of around 60,000, and

While Gencon is far from a LARP convention, it hosts a large number of larps from many different larp commuities, as well as the unique to Gencon [[True Dungeon]], a larp-like fantasy game which uses shuffleboard-style as well as larp mechanics and boasts being Gencon's best-attended event.

'''Costuming Hints''' are short descriptions of characters send out to players in advance of (or instead of) sending [[character sheet]]s, for the purpose of allowing players to work on [[Costuming]] in advance of seeing the full character.

This practice was far more common in the [[Theatre-style]] community prior to the near-universal adoption of the Internet -- however, it is still used in cases where the character sheets are in progress when the players are notified of who they are playing, when only general aspects of characters are determined pre-game, rather than character details, or, as in many [[Amnesia games]], when casting is pre-determined, but there is a game-related reason players are not given their sheets before the game starts.

Some (including the first, [[Tabula Rasa]]) amnesia games feature fully-written character sheets that are re-accquired over the course of the game
